Detroit Lake is a popular 9-mile lake in Detroit, Oregon in the Cascade Mountain range that needed a log shelter and restroom which provides camping, boating, swimming, and hiking activities.
The City of Detroit is 52 miles east of Salem, which is the capital of Oregon. Detroit sits on Oregon Route 22 which is known as the North Santiam Highway which eventually leads to the Hoodoo Ski Area.
Detroit is in Marion County and was named after Detroit, Michigan in the 1890’s due to the amount of people from there who lived in Detroit, OR. Detroit is a part of the Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Not far to the east is Mt. Jefferson and the Mt. Jefferson wilderness along with the Three Fingered Jack Mountain peak. The Santiam River heads to the west after Detroit Lake, making its way into the Willamette River.
Detroit Lake stores water for the City of Salem and other communities to use. Stahlman Point Trailhead overlooks the lake and provides some scenic views of the area and surrounding mountains.
The Detroit Lake Reservoir was created with the completion of the Detroit Dam in 1953 by the Army Corps of Engineers. Although the reservoir was created primarily for power generation and flood control, today Detroit Lake is a very popular recreation site in the Cascade Mountain Range.
Detroit Lake has 300 camping sites, a basketball court, horseshoe pits, volleyball area, a playground, boat ramps, a fishing dock, visitor center, and a log pavilion.
Romtec designed this large log pavilion and accompanying restroom building to match the rustic environment around Detroit Lake and to accommodate the large number of park patrons.
The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department manages the Detroit Lake State Recreation Area in partnership with the Willamette National Forest.
