Alaska is one of the most scenic places in the world with its many glaciers, mountains, lakes, and forests.
Chugach National Forest in Southern Alaska is an amazing place with 6,908,540 acres. Prince Williams Sound sits just to the south of Chugach National Forest while it also covers parts of the Kenai Peninsula and the Copper River Delta. There are many shorelines, forests, glaciers, and rivers with much of it undeveloped by roads or trails. About one third of the forest is covered in ice.
One unique thing about the Chugach National Forest is the bald eagle population that is larger than the contiguous 48 states combined. It is one of the largest national forests in the U.S. National Forest System. Anchorage sits to the west of the national forest while also being home to the supervisor’s office. But there are ranger district offices in Cordova, Girdwood, and Seward as well.
Spencer Glacier starts off the “whistlestop” series of the Alaska Railroad. Not accessible by road, Alaska tourists and adventurers must arrive by train at Spencer Glacier. This spectacular glacier is a massive wall of ice that is moving down the mountains to Spencer Lake.
A tour guide can use the Romtec designed pavilion and shelter to deliver an educational oration or to map out activities in the area. The two-room restroom with ADA bathrooms and the pavilion structures sit on a foundation of authentic railroad ties donated by the Alaska Railroad. All these structures were left unfinished with natural wood to promote the look of a railroad camp from a previous era.
Camping is allowed at Spencer Glacier along with cabins, kayaking, or rafting. There is also a visit to the nearby Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center available as part of the programs at Spencer Glacier.
Romtec was proud to be part of this project in the Chugach National Forest at Spencer Glacier as we designed and supplied the restroom building and pavilions. These buildings add great value to the glacier area and allow people to get out of the elements while enjoying this natural wonder.
If you are looking to design a restroom building for your park, forest, glacier, or campground, Romtec can design, supply, and build a structure that fits your needs, meets your timeline, and surpasses your expectations. Our site-built structures don’t disrupt the surrounding environment and are a great fit in rural places. Contact us today to get started on your project.
