Romtec was pleased to partner with Pierce County and HBB Landscape Architecture on this pavilion at Cross Park in Tacoma, Washington. Tacoma, Washington sits along the Puget Sound, which is about 30 miles southwest of Seattle.
The city is known for various places like the Museum of Glass, Lemay – America’s Car Museum, Point Defiance Park, Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium, Wild Waves Theme and Water Park, the Tacoma Art Museum, and the Washington State History Museum.
Tacoma had a population of 219,346 at the 2020 census and is the county seat of Pierce County. It is the third most populous city in Washington. Tacoma is a port city and the business center for the South Sound region, which has a population of about 1,000,000.
Interstate 5, State Route 7, and Route 16 go through Tacoma. Route 16 crosses the Puget Sound over the Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
Mount Rainier National Park is about 60 miles southeast of Tacoma and can be seen from the city.
Other attractions in Tacoma include the W.W. Seymour Botanical Conservatory, Swan Creek Park, Allenmore Golf Course, Cheney Stadium, Tacoma Nature Center, Fircrest Golf Club, Wapato Park, Charlotte’s Blueberry Park, and Cross Park.
Cross Park spans 64 acres with a variety of natural areas in Fredrickson.
The park’s initial 4-acre development has been designed to cater to the community’s needs, featuring expansive green spaces, an accessible playground, and the transformation of historic barns into a vibrant community center.
The site also provides versatile indoor and outdoor spaces for meetings and events, scenic walking trails, a park shelter, and convenient on-site parking, making it a perfect locale for family outings and community gatherings in the Tacoma area.
The Frederickson Community Center is at the center of the park next to the playground, natural areas, parking lot, pavilion, and walking trails.
In the mid 1930’s the Mayflower Dairy’s hay and milking farm became a staple in the community where Cross Park sits today. In 1973, Stan and Joan Cross purchased sixty-two and a half acres from the Sutter family. They raised beef cattle and other farm animals.
The Romtec pavilion sits next to the playground with picnic tables for recreation and relaxation. The pavilion features steel columns, a metal roof, glulam rafters, glulam purlins, a single slope roof, a steel knee brace, glulam beams, and tongue and groove ceiling, that all fit together with the adjacent playground and forest.
Pierce County then reached out to directly purchase the design & supply of the Romtec pavilion for Cross Park in Tacoma, Washington.
HBB has already brought a second opportunity to Romtec including a small restroom for a Pierce County project. HBB is a first-time project driver and is a great partner as landscape architects in the Seattle area.
