Grand Rapids, Minnesota got its name after the 3.5-mile long rapids on the Mississippi River that flow through the city.
Grand Rapids was known as a logging town as the Mississippi River provided easy access for transportation to other areas. But the rapids prevented boats from moving any further upriver. The city is about 90 minutes from Lake Superior to the east and about three hours from Minneapolis, the state capital.
The Pokegama Dam Recreation Area sits adjacent to the Mississippi River where visitors enjoy camping, boating, fishing, picnicking, playground areas, and wildlife viewing. There are 19 camp sites and two tent sites at the recreation area.
The Pokegama Dam is located three miles upstream from Grand Rapids and was built in 1885. It has since gone through several renovations.
The United States Army Core of Engineers (USACE) owns and operates the Pokegama Dam Recreation Area along with the Pokegama Dam. The USACE reached out to Romtec for a custom cedar log pavilion for the recreation area.
The Cedar log pavilion features a metal roof, log columns, log truss system, log purlins, and log beams that fit wonderfully with the background of this scenic area on the Mississippi River. The pavilion provides shade and space for visitors while enjoying a picnic or a party with friends and family.
The pavilion is a great addition to an amazing campground.
