For this sidewalk restroom park renovation, Romtec provided the design and supply of this building for the City of Arcata for their Carlson Park renovations.
Arcata is a city on the northwest coastline of California, where the Mad River flows through the town. The city received some grants to renovate the park by providing river access, improving trails, adding a playground, an event area, and a new restroom. This renovation is unique as the park is one of the only river access points in the city.
The city wanted a local artist to paint a mural on the restroom, once it was installed, to highlight local wildlife and plants in this area. The restroom was a huge success to the local community.
The sidewalk restroom features an ADA restroom with a trench drain, outdoor sink, and many louvered vents, making it a compact and vandal proof structure. The sidewalk restroom is an affordable option which makes for easy installation and overall maintenance.

Sidewalk Restroom Park Renovation
The City of Arcata has received numerous grants to renovate Carlson Park and add on features including improved trails, river access, a playground, picnic and event area, parking lot and restroom. The park is one of the only city owned river access points.
The new playground features a theme to include local wildlife and outdoor recreation elements as the playground is situated near the new river access point and other new recreation features being developed around the park.
Romtec worked with the City of Arcata to provide the Romtec sidewalk restroom. The sidewalk restroom features a single user ADA restroom with a trench drain, outdoor sink, and louvered vents, which provide a compact and vandal resistant restroom. This is a highly ventilated restroom that is cost effective, with easy installation and maintenance. The sink on the outside of the building is a great way to prioritize affordability. Removing the sink allows us to lower the footprint of the building while still meeting all ADA requirements. The city liked that the sidewalk restroom uses standard products that are more readily available, improving the maintenance experience for their crew.
The City of Arcata was a first-time customer for Romtec, and they determined that it would be beneficial to utilize the Sourcewell purchasing contract to procure our building. Purchasing contracts take the hassle out of purchasing for government entities and saved the City money on the project.
Vandal Proof Restroom
After installation, they City of Arcata hired a local artist to paint a mural on the side of the building. The restroom painting features a river and various wildlife local to the Arcata area which adds a local flair to this sidewalk restroom.
Painting the restroom is also a tactic for protecting the building’s integrity. Local vandals have been found to be less inclined to tag a piece of art.
