For this educational program shed and pavilion at Schmidt Woods Park, Romtec designed and supplied a sugar house where the City of Plymouth will provide educational programming about maple syrup production. The land at this educational program shed and pavilion, was donated as part of the estate of Roger Schmidt, where it was previously used to collect sap from the sugar maple trees.
The City of Plymouth wanted to continue the legacy at Schmidt Woods Park by honoring Roger for donating the land and providing education around the history of this location.
Romtec provided a timber framed building with cedar lap siding and timber columns to reflect the old maple sugar houses and blend in with the surrounding wooden playground and wooded area.
Plymouth, Minnesota is a suburb of Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area and a city in Hennepin County.
Plymouth Parks and Recreation developed Schmidt Woods Park as a new park for the community. Confluence was the landscape architect and planning partner with the City of Plymouth Parks and Recreation on the creation of Schmidt Woods Park.
Sugar House Shed and Pavilion
The park sits on land donated by the estate of Roger “Pete” Schmidt, who died in 2021. The land had been in the family since 1983 and Schmidt wanted a place where folks could enjoy nature. The land was previously used to collect sap from sugar maple trees and the City of Plymouth wanted to continue this legacy.
The Romtec sugar house will be utilized by the city to provide educational opportunities to learn about maple syrup production. Also, at the park are walking trails, a picnic shelter, and a wooden playground that was designed to blend in with the natural surroundings of trees.
Confluence is a professional creative firm of landscape architects, urban designers and planners with roots across the country but based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. They were having a hard time finding someone to provide what they were looking for in the building. They were adding a shed and shelter to Schmidt Woods Park for outdoor learning. These were to be wholly new structures that are owner supplied and installed by a local contractor.
Romtec designed and supplied the two structures, a pavilion and shed, for Schmidt Woods Park.
Educational Space Structure
The shed features a utility space for the sugar house, Fabral metal roofing over wood rafters, poly windows, Lithonia lighting, Hager sensors, Intermatic timers, Romtec cedar lap siding over timber framed wall, and timber columns with roof overhang.
The pavilion features a covered picnic area, a Fabral metal roof, American Laminators glulam columns and beams, Lithonia lighting, glulam rafters, ridge beams, mid beam, enclosed arch opening, glulam eave beam, and glulam knee brace curved beam.
The shed has a unique structure – it is stick built and framed with no CMU Block and many custom aspects. The sugar house or educational building was an unusual design for Romtec but it was fun to try something new.
Park Educational Program Pavilion
Custom Builders Inc. installed the pavilion and shed on behalf of Plymouth Parks and Recreation. Custom Builders, Inc., located near Cold Spring, MN, offers construction services including design, building, project management, and much more as a custom home builder.
Romtec was pleased to partner with the City of Plymouth Park and Recreation department to provide this shed and pavilion for Schmidt Woods Park, in Plymouth, Minnesota.
We designed the building with some unique features including the stick built and frame without CMU block, cedar shake siding, timber columns, and poly windows. This will be the sugar house, where programming will teach students and visitors about maple syrup production, an honor to the history of this site and previous estate.
The pavilion adds another covered space for educational programs, picnic tables, or a shaded area that allows guests to get out of the rain or direct sunlight. This wooded pavilion features a variety of elements that blend seamlessly with the surrounding wooded playground and trees. Romtec designed these structures to blend in with the surrounding environment, something we do often with a lot of park and recreation projects to deliver a building that matches or fits within the space.
At Romtec we design, supply, and construct restroom buildings, pavilions, sheds, and concession stands to fit the needs of park and recreation projects all over the country.
