Anti-Vandalism Park Restroom for Bear Creek Park in Medford, OR

Romtec was pleased to work with the City of Medford on an anti-vandalism park restroom building with several security features to combat defacement at Bear Creek Park. Medford, Oregon is a city in the southwest part of the state located along Interstate 5 near the California border. It is the county seat of Jackson County and had a population of 85,824 at the 2020 census, making it the 8th most populous city in Oregon.

Medford is 27 miles north of the California border and sits in remains of volcanic flow areas highlighted by the Upper and Lower Table Rock lava plateaus. Mt. McLoughlin and Crater Lake, which was formerly Mount Mazama, are also nearby attractions.

Sitting in a rain shadow called the Rogue Valley, Medford is located between the Cascade Range and the Siskiyou Mountains. It misses much of the rain typically seen in the Willamette Valley, making it a drier and sunnier climate.

Some of the major attractions in Medford include DANCIN Vineyards, RoxyAnn Winery, Padigan, Edenvale Winery, Prescott Park, Roxy Ann Overlook, The Copper Plank, Rogue Valley Country Club, Village Center Park, Centennial Golf Club, Bear Creek Park, Medford Railroad Park, Kaleidoscope Pizzeria & Pub, Crater Rock Museum, and Rogue Valley Family Fun Center.

Bear Creek Park

Bear Creek Park is 110 acres with little league baseball fields, an off-leash dog area, a BMX track, an outdoor performing amphitheater, a 25,000 square-foot skatepark, three covered pavilions, four tennis courts, and two restroom facilities. The Panther Pride Trail is a 2.3 mile soft surface trail within the park. Bear Creek flows through the park as well.

There are a variety of recreational opportunities at Bear Creek Park including walking, picnicking, and skateboarding, along with musical and community events at the amphitheater.

The City of Medford who owns and operates Bear Creek Park, needed a new restroom building for the park. Romtec worked with the City of Medford on the Cedar Links Park project, and the City wanted to replicate that design at Bear Creek.

The City of Medford has approved the purchase through the InterMountain ESD Cooperative (Oregon’s AEPA Contract).

This restroom building is a custom multi-user block building that was designed to incorporate some of the same features as Romtec’s sidewalk restroom to address vandalism.

Bear Creek Park

The site engineer was RH2 and Romtec provided the construction turnkey services for the restroom building on behalf of the City of Medford.

The City of Medford liked the idea of the Sidewalk Restroom but needed something much larger for their parks. Romtec sales was able to develop a multi-user restroom building that captures some of the security features of the Sidewalk Restroom (i.e. “red” security light tied to interior motion sensors, openings in the first course of block) combined with their unique gate/door access.

The door and gate system were fabricated by our Romtec metal shop. The doors include standard door hardware, and the gate is padlocked in the open position during the day and in the closed position at night for added security.

The City of Medford has a history of the unhoused population breaking into their restrooms, and they were tired of replacing the expensive steel doors every other month. Romtec came up with the preliminary design of the door/gate system and we took it through to fruition.

The multiuser restroom building features double swing steel security doors, steel swing gate with mesh and crash bar, mechanical room, metal roof, pre-engineered energy truss, red light with vandal resistant cage tied to interior motion sensors, board and batten siding, CMU concrete block wall, and long ground level vents.

Romtec was pleased to work with the City of Medford on this anti-vandalism park restroom building with several security features to combat vandalism at Bear Creek Park. The park is a safer place with these new security features and helps local police to keep the building protected even during the nighttime. That Memorial Park Project is one of our favorites too – it truly made a positive impact for our visitors, and we will continue to keep Romtec in mind as opportunities to collaborate come up!

I have to mention that aside from the products Romtec supplies and the workmanship of the subcontractors (Ken and crew), I’m also very impressed with your responsiveness to issues – you’re a far cry from the usual taillight warranty.

You get what you pay for. Romtec provided the most perfect, seamless, flawless project I could have imagined. I would use Romtec 100 times over and will not consider any other options moving forward. You were able to beat my original budget and expectations. Everyone involved was great from sales to construction management, to the construction team themselves.

If I were to do this again, I would no doubt hire Romtec and its subcontractors to do the installation. Hindsight is always 20/20 and I learned a valuable lesson that I will hire Romtec’s certified installers to do the construction.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Dan Keagy (Romtec’s assistant construction manager). He in my opinion went above and beyond to solve our problems and problems that were not necessarily his or Romtec’s to solve. He is a great guy and great resource for Romtec. Overall, the biggest thing to me was the service after the sale. Romtec didn’t just make the sale and move on, but they supported us through a very long and arduous construction process.

Romtec was phenomenal when it came to service after the sale. They were available anytime there were questions. In addition, there were some issues with missing materials. Even though it was not Romtec’s fault for the missing materials, the were more than willing to send us the missing materials to get the project done. Romtec even sent out a representative to tour the site to give firsthand recommendations on how to proceed.
