The Imagine Playground at Dublin Sports Grounds in Dublin, California was honored as co-winner of the Project of the Year Award, for Structures $5M to $25M from the Northern California American Public Works Association (NorCal APWA).
Providing an Opportunity to Play for Everyone
The City of Dublin realized the need in their community for a playground with varying abilities and created the multi-faceted Imagine Playground at Dublin Sports Grounds. The playground was dedicated on March 6, 2021. The design of the playground focused on providing opportunities to play for people with all kinds of special needs.
The project included an all-inclusive playground, picnic area, new landscaping, parking facilities, and pathways that connect to sports fields plus the ADA compliant restroom facility.
All-Inclusive Restroom & Concession Building
Romtec designed and supplied a six-unit single-user restroom building which included a concession stand and a storage room. The 2086 modified model features a single slope roof, tongue and groove decking, and a roll-up concession Window 4′-8″ x 4′. The building includes CMU smooth face concrete block and six ADA gender-neutral restrooms.
“Without this team, the project would not be the success it has been with our residents and visitors to our community,” City of Dublin, Public Works Director Andrew Russell said. “The now “award-winning” playground is quite the accomplishment, especially considering how the construction timing aligned with the COVID-19 pandemic. Dublin Public Works is extremely proud of the project and project team.”
Dublin Sports Grounds is a 22.8-acre park that features one lighted baseball diamond, two lighted softball diamonds, and two lighted soccer fields.
Community Feedback on Design
The City of Dublin received feedback from the community and a variety of organizations who work with people with special needs including Dublin Unified School District Special Education teachers, sports field user groups, Little League Challenger Baseball, and the School of Imagination. This public input helped with the design of the all-abilities playground.
Perry’s Precision Concrete installed the building while US BIO Containment & Construction was the general contractor of the project. Pakpour Consulting Group was the civil engineer while Gates & Associates was the project driver as the landscape architect.
There is also a public art piece called “Conversations,” by artist Barbara Grygutis, that was installed near the playground. The art piece is illuminated every night.
Imagine Playground is a great example of a city coming together with its citizens to fill a need for children of all abilities. The new playground is a great asset along with the restroom and concession facility that can provide refreshments for the nearby sports fields or other community events.
