Cathedral City, California – All Gender Restroom Building

Esperanza Park is a new public space in Cathedral City, California, designed to connect the CV Link trail through the Coachella Valley. As part of this transformative project, the City commissioned Romtec to design and supply an all-gender restroom building that reflects modern values and community needs.

This facility is a symbol of thoughtful design, public investment, and collaboration between trusted partners. The restroom building is a cornerstone of the park’s infrastructure.

A Grant-Funded Public Restroom Building at Esperanza Park

Esperanza Park is being developed with the support of a public grant awarded to Cathedral City. The park will serve as a vital connector for the CV Link, a multi-modal pathway that spans the Coachella Valley, promoting outdoor recreation, alternative transportation, and regional connectivity.

The all gender restroom building is a key component of this new park, offering accessible facilities for all visitors, including cyclists, walkers, families, and tourists. The City’s commitment to inclusivity is evident in its choice to install a gender-neutral, ADA-compliant restroom facility that meets the needs of a diverse population.

A Turnkey Restroom Solution

This building is a direct purchase from the City, reflecting their confidence in Romtec’s products and services. Both the project owner and Verde Design, the landscape architecture firm involved, worked with Romtec on previous projects and were familiar with the quality and reliability of our turnkey restroom solutions.

The City selected the floor plan, layout, and options for the building, ensuring the final design aligns with their vision for Esperanza Park. From the beginning, Romtec collaborated closely with stakeholders to deliver a facility that meets both functional and aesthetic goals.

Romtec’s scope includes the design, supply, and installation of the building package. This is a turnkey project, meaning Romtec provides everything from engineering and fabrication to delivery and installation. The installation will be carried out by Ken Perry Construction, a contractor experienced in public infrastructure projects.

Romtec’s process includes:

  • Engineering submittals and sealed plans
  • Fabrication of building components
  • Delivery coordination
  • On-site installation
  • Final walkthrough and sign-off

This streamlined approach ensures quality control, code compliance, and timely delivery.

Design Features of the All-Gender Restroom Building

  1. Universal Accessibility
The building is fully ADA-compliant and designed for all users, regardless of gender identity or physical ability. Key features include:

    • Wide, accessible doorways with lever locks and continuous hinges
    • Stainless steel grab bars and ADA-compliant fixtures
    • Tactile and Braille signage, including California Title 24-compliant all gender symbols
  2. Durable Construction
Built to withstand heavy use and environmental conditions, the structure includes:

    • CMU block walls with reinforced rebar
    • Stainless steel toilets, sinks, and dispensers
    • Powder-coated steel doors and frames
    • Hurricane-rated door closers and magnetic locking systems
  3. Sustainable Materials and Systems
The building incorporates energy- and water-efficient systems:

    • LED lighting with motion sensors and photocell controls
    • Low-flow flush valves and metering faucets
    • Solar readiness: Roof structure designed to support future solar panels
  4. Ventilation and Comfort
Natural ventilation is provided through powder-coated wire mesh vents above doors and in gable ends. Covered entries offer protection from the elements, enhancing comfort and usability.

All-Gender Restroom Engineering

Romtec provided a full scope of supply, design, and installation submittal (SSDIS), which includes:

  • Architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing plans
  • Sealed drawings for permitting and inspection
  • Coordination with city officials and design teams

The building meets all applicable codes, including California Building Code, ADA standards, and local accessibility requirements. The City’s Building Official and other departments have reviewed and approved the plans, ensuring full compliance.

Customized Restroom Facility

The City made several custom selections for the building, including:

  • Powder-coated finishes in Basalt Grey and Off-White
  • Stainless steel toilet fixtures
  • Concealed flush valves with large push buttons
  • Exterior lap siding painted

These choices reflect the City’s desire for a high-quality, visually appealing facility that integrates seamlessly with the park’s overall design.

Community Impact of the Unisex Restroom

The all gender restroom building will serve as a vital amenity for Esperanza Park, supporting:

  • Inclusivity: Welcoming all visitors, regardless of gender identity
  • Accessibility: Providing ADA-compliant facilities for people with disabilities
  • Safety: Featuring durable, tamper-resistant fixtures and clear sightlines
  • Sustainability: Incorporating energy-efficient systems and solar readiness

As the CV Link expands through the Coachella Valley, Esperanza Park will become a destination for recreation, connection, and community engagement.

Inclusive, Sustainable Restroom Design

The all gender restroom building at Esperanza Park is a testament to Cathedral City’s commitment to inclusive, sustainable public spaces. Through a direct purchase and collaboration with Romtec, the City has ensured that this facility meets the highest standards of design, functionality, and accessibility.

This project is poised to make a lasting impact on the community. As the CV Link continues to grow, Esperanza Park will stand out as a model of thoughtful planning and inclusive design.

I have to mention that aside from the products Romtec supplies and the workmanship of the subcontractors (Ken and crew), I’m also very impressed with your responsiveness to issues – you’re a far cry from the usual taillight warranty.

You get what you pay for. Romtec provided the most perfect, seamless, flawless project I could have imagined. I would use Romtec 100 times over and will not consider any other options moving forward. You were able to beat my original budget and expectations. Everyone involved was great from sales to construction management, to the construction team themselves.

If I were to do this again, I would no doubt hire Romtec and its subcontractors to do the installation. Hindsight is always 20/20 and I learned a valuable lesson that I will hire Romtec’s certified installers to do the construction.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Dan Keagy (Romtec’s assistant construction manager). He in my opinion went above and beyond to solve our problems and problems that were not necessarily his or Romtec’s to solve. He is a great guy and great resource for Romtec. Overall, the biggest thing to me was the service after the sale. Romtec didn’t just make the sale and move on, but they supported us through a very long and arduous construction process.

Romtec was phenomenal when it came to service after the sale. They were available anytime there were questions. In addition, there were some issues with missing materials. Even though it was not Romtec’s fault for the missing materials, the were more than willing to send us the missing materials to get the project done. Romtec even sent out a representative to tour the site to give firsthand recommendations on how to proceed.
