Huntington Beach, California – City Park Buildings

A series of city park buildings developed throughout Huntington Beach, California, demonstrates a long-term approach to improving public amenities and infrastructure across a diverse and highly active park system. Over the past decade, Romtec has worked with the City of Huntington Beach to design and supply buildings at multiple locations throughout the community.

These projects include a wide range of public park facilities, including restroom buildings, concession spaces, retail buildings, and multi-use facilities. Each structure was designed to meet the unique needs of its location while maintaining a consistent architectural appearance across the city. Together, these city park buildings support daily recreation, special events, tourism, and ongoing park operations, creating a reliable and flexible park infrastructure system.

Huntington Beach and its Park System

Huntington Beach, located in Southern California, is well known for its coastal environment, strong recreational culture, and extensive park system. Often referred to as “Surf City USA,” the city attracts residents and visitors alike with its beaches, trails, sports facilities, and outdoor recreation opportunities.

The City of Huntington Beach manages a wide range of public spaces, including beachfront destinations, urban parks, sports complexes, and natural areas. This diversity requires park system buildings that can be adapted to different environments while maintaining consistency in appearance, durability, and functionality.

The development of these city park buildings reflects the city’s commitment to providing reliable amenities throughout its park network. By partnering on multiple projects over several years, the city has been able to establish a cohesive visual identity while addressing a variety of operational and recreational needs.

Project Overview: Multi-Site Building Program

The Huntington Beach projects represent a citywide effort to improve municipal park infrastructure and amenities across several important locations. Rather than focusing on a single park, these city park buildings were distributed throughout the community, with each site requiring unique functionality and design considerations.

Romtec worked closely with the city to design and supply buildings that aligned with each location’s purpose while maintaining consistent materials, architectural features, and long-term durability.

Huntington Beach Pier

One of the most recognizable projects in Huntington Beach is the collection of retail buildings located on the popular Huntington Beach Pier. These structures serve one of the city’s most visible public destinations and are frequented by both residents and tourists throughout the year.

Romtec designed and supplied custom retail buildings that complement the architectural style of the existing pier structures. Unlike traditional park buildings, these facilities required a specialized design approach, including unique geometry that matched an existing hexagonal structure on the pier.

The buildings feature large display windows, open merchandising areas, and sliding doors that improve accessibility and functionality. These highly customized public facilities demonstrate how city park buildings can be adapted to support tourism and commercial activity while maintaining a cohesive design aesthetic.

Huntington Beach Bicycle Trail

Along the Huntington Beach Bicycle Trail, Romtec provided two public restroom buildings designed to complement the scenic coastal environment. The trail is heavily used by cyclists, pedestrians, and beach visitors, making convenient restroom access an essential amenity.

In addition to providing reliable restroom facilities, the buildings include secure storage areas for maintenance personnel and park operations equipment.

These city park buildings demonstrate how public park facilities can enhance user experience while blending into natural surroundings. The result is durable infrastructure that supports high-traffic recreational areas without detracting from the coastal landscape.

Central Park Sports Complex

At the Huntington Central Park Sports Complex, Romtec designed a multi-purpose building that functions as both a restroom facility and an operational center for nearby batting cages. This project highlights the flexibility of city park buildings when designed to serve multiple functions within a single structure.

The building includes public restrooms as well as a service window used to manage batting cage operations. Exterior design elements match the architectural style established throughout the park system, helping create a consistent appearance across multiple facilities.

As one of the largest city-owned parks in Orange County, Huntington Central Park requires efficient infrastructure to support its many recreational activities. Multi-use park buildings like this maximize functionality while reducing the need for additional standalone structures.

Worthy Park

Worthy Park is another location where Romtec provided a restroom building as part of a broader park improvement project. Named after Norman L. Worthy, a key figure in Huntington Beach Park development, the area continues to serve as an important community space.

The restroom building at Worthy Park includes two unisex restrooms and a mechanical space for storage. Designed to match the City’s established architecture, the building features similar aesthetics to the other structures.

These city park buildings highlight how even smaller parks benefit from consistent design and durable infrastructure, ensuring that visitors have access to reliable amenities regardless of location.

Huntington Central Park Phases 2 and 3

Romtec also supported multiple phases of restroom development within Huntington Central Park, including both new installations and replacements of existing facilities. These projects demonstrate how city park buildings can evolve over time as parks grow and change.

In Phase 2, Romtec supplied a multi-unit restroom building designed to handle high visitor traffic. The structure includes multiple restrooms, along with durable finishes that help the building withstand frequent use.

Phase 3 included the addition of an amphitheater restroom building, further expanding restroom access within the park. These updates were part of a larger strategy to modernize infrastructure while maintaining consistent design throughout the park.

By working across multiple phases, Romtec helped the city develop a coordinated system of park system buildings that supports long-term use and adaptability.

Benefits of City Park Buildings

• Creates a consistent aesthetic across a wide range of park locations
• Supports a wide range of different uses, from restrooms to concessions and retail
• Improves maintenance efficiency
• Enhances user experience with reliable and accessible amenities
• Allows flexibility for different site conditions and environments
• Supports long-term planning across an entire park system

Working alongside a single provider for multiple projects allows cities to maintain quality and consistency in their infrastructure, as well as simplify project coordination and execution.

Conclusion

The Huntington Beach projects demonstrate how a coordinated approach to city park buildings can strengthen infrastructure across an entire community. From the iconic retail structures on the Huntington Beach Pier to restroom facilities along trails and throughout parks, each building contributes to a larger network of reliable public park facilities.

By implementing park system buildings across multiple locations and development phases, the City of Huntington Beach has created a cohesive infrastructure program that supports recreation, tourism, and everyday community use. Through its long-term partnership with the city, Romtec has helped design and supply durable, functional buildings that meet the needs of diverse park environments while maintaining a consistent architectural identity. Together, these city park buildings support the community today while providing flexible infrastructure for future growth and development.

I have to mention that aside from the products Romtec supplies and the workmanship of the subcontractors (Ken and crew), I’m also very impressed with your responsiveness to issues – you’re a far cry from the usual taillight warranty.

You get what you pay for. Romtec provided the most perfect, seamless, flawless project I could have imagined. I would use Romtec 100 times over and will not consider any other options moving forward. You were able to beat my original budget and expectations. Everyone involved was great from sales to construction management, to the construction team themselves.

If I were to do this again, I would no doubt hire Romtec and its subcontractors to do the installation. Hindsight is always 20/20 and I learned a valuable lesson that I will hire Romtec’s certified installers to do the construction.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention Dan Keagy (Romtec’s assistant construction manager). He in my opinion went above and beyond to solve our problems and problems that were not necessarily his or Romtec’s to solve. He is a great guy and great resource for Romtec. Overall, the biggest thing to me was the service after the sale. Romtec didn’t just make the sale and move on, but they supported us through a very long and arduous construction process.

Romtec was phenomenal when it came to service after the sale. They were available anytime there were questions. In addition, there were some issues with missing materials. Even though it was not Romtec’s fault for the missing materials, the were more than willing to send us the missing materials to get the project done. Romtec even sent out a representative to tour the site to give firsthand recommendations on how to proceed.
