McLaughlin Eastshore State Park – San Francisco, CA
In the Brickyard Phase 1 project, Romtec worked with the East Bay Regional Park District to supply a restroom structure for their redevelopment of the Brickyard site at McLaughlin Eastshore State Park in San Francisco, California.
The McLaughlin Eastshore State Park “extends 8.5 miles along the East Bay shoreline from the Bay Bridge to Richmond … [and] includes 1,833 acres of uplands and tidelands along the waterfronts.” The San Franscisco Bay Trail follows the waterline throughout the length of the park, including the Brickyard site that is nestled near the Berkeley Pier. As an ongoing effort to restore areas that were used as landfills or industrial areas, the Brickyard site is undergoing renovations to reestablish native plants in the area and develop amenities such as walking trails, picnic areas, and restrooms. This project is just part of a larger project spanning back decades to protect the open space and clean up contaminated areas. (“McLaughlin Eastshore”, n.d.)

For this project, Romtec supplied a multi-user restroom with a mechanical space. The structure features four individual unisex restrooms that are American Disability Act (ADA) compliant with stainless steel grab bars and enough room to maneuver a wheelchair. The restrooms are divided with two on each side of the mechanical space, which can be accessed through a door out of public view and access.
The structure is composed of gray split face block with a board and batt siding in the gable ends for an aesthetic mix of texture and material. The doors, door frames, and gable vents are powder coated black for a clean finish that will resist damage from weather and the salty seaside environment. The metal roofing has additional protection in the form of Iko Stormshield, an invisible ice and water protector.
Inside each of the restrooms are high-use fixtures that are suitable for high traffic areas. High-use fixtures are stainless steel and designed to be resistant to damage and vandalism. They are a great option for customers that want to cut down on potential maintenance costs. Each restroom also features a diaper deck so that parents can easily tend to their small children.
The renovations and restoration of the Brickyard site preserves the coastline for future generations to enjoy the crashing of the waves. With the San Franscisco Bay Trail winding through the McLaughlin Eastshore State Park, the restroom is sure to be appreciated by guests of the trail and will encourage guests to visit the park to enjoy the natural beauty of the Pacific Ocean.
