North Carolina is home to a diverse range of parks and recreation areas, from mountain trails and coastal beaches to urban greenways and community playgrounds. Parks and recreation departments across the state play a vital role in enhancing quality of life, promoting outdoor activity, and preserving natural resources for future generations. These spaces serve as essential hubs for community engagement, wellness, and environmental stewardship.

Romtec specializes in the design and supply of high-quality restroom buildings tailored for parks and recreation facilities across North Carolina. We’re proud to have partnered with numerous North Carolina Parks and Recreation Departments, delivering restroom solutions that meet both functional needs and aesthetic goals. With extensive experience in the state, we understand how to design site-built restrooms that blend seamlessly with natural landscapes, park environments, and existing structures.

Blackwood Farm Park – Chapel Hill, NC

North Carolina Restroom Building

Blackwood Farm Park, located in Chapel Hill, offers over four miles of hiking trails, historic farmlands, open fields, picnic areas, picnic shelters, a fishing pond, and convenient restroom facilities. In December 2001, Orange County acquired the 152-acre property with the vision of developing it into a public park for community use and outdoor recreation.

As part of continued improvements, Orange County sought to install a two-unit waterless restroom with vault toilets to better serve park visitors.

Romtec provided a durable and attractive solution with a two-unit, unisex, ADA-compliant waterless restroom. The building features a single-slope Fabral metal roof, poly vent, cedar board and batten siding over a CMU concrete block wall, a 750-gallon polyethylene vault, Romtec’s kick-resistant wall vent, gable windows, American Laminators glulam beams, Steelcraft doors, and Hager door closers, ensuring both functionality and long-term performance.

Susan Hatchell Landscape Architecture, based in Raleigh, served as the project’s Landscape Architect. Romtec was specified as a “preferred vendor” alternate in the bid, allowing Orange County the option to sole-source the restroom building.

J. Kester & Rose LLC was the installing contractor, working on behalf of Orange County. Their team was highly responsive and a pleasure to collaborate with throughout the project. This partnership between Orange County, Susan Hatchell, and J. Kester & Rose LLC made for a successful installation of a waterless vault restroom in the scenic and historic setting of Blackwood Farm Park.

Easton Park – Winston-Salem, NC

Restroom in NC

Easton Park is a well-loved community space in Winston-Salem, offering a variety of amenities including basketball courts, a children’s playground, drinking fountains, a misting station, open play areas, a picnic shelter, and walking trails.

To support these amenities, the City of Winston-Salem partnered with Romtec to install a new restroom facility. This North Carolina restroom includes two unisex, single-user restrooms and a mechanical room. Key features include a Fabral metal roof with extended overhangs, Steelcraft doors, American Laminators glulam beams, Hager door closers, Metcraft toilets, Lithonia lighting, cedar trim, gable windows, exhaust fan, CMU concrete block walls with stone veneer, door louvers, and vent boots.

This project marks the third Romtec restroom installed in a City of Winston-Salem park, modeled after the original Romtec restroom building installed at Miller Park.

Stantec served as the project partner alongside the City, while Bar Construction Company completed the installation on behalf of the city. This project enhanced Easton Park by improving accessibility and comfort for park visitors and the surrounding community.

Miller Park – Winston-Salem, NC

North Carolina Restroom Building

Miller Park is one of Winston-Salem’s most established and diverse parks, offering a wide range of amenities including an amphitheater, baseball field, bocce courts, playgrounds, drinking fountains, electrical outlets, grills, horseshoe pits, picnic shelters, tennis courts, a recreation center, restrooms, and extensive walking trails.

As part of a major park improvement project, Romtec was brought in to design a new restroom facility in collaboration with Stantec prior to the bidding process. Hodgin Construction was awarded the bid and completed the restroom installation for the City.

The new restroom building includes two unisex, ADA-compliant single-user restrooms, a mechanical room, and a storage room. The Romtec 2024 Sierra II Compact DBL Restroom features a Custom-Bilt Metals roof, stone veneer, American Laminators glulam beams, board and batten siding over CMU concrete block walls, a rough-sawn timber truss roof extension, wire mesh gable vents, Steelcraft doors, Proflo toilets, and Lithonia lighting.

This restroom was part of a broader revitalization effort for Miller Park, which was originally established in 1942. The 40-acre park had suffered decades of wear, with aging trails, deteriorated footbridges, and stream channel erosion. Stantec led the comprehensive park restoration, preserving the historic arch and stone features, replacing footbridges, restoring the step-pool stream system, and updating trails, restrooms, and timber retaining walls.

Romtec was proud to partner on this restroom project, contributing to the transformation of Miller Park into a more accessible and welcoming green space for future generations.

Bethania Freedman’s Park – Winston-Salem, NC

North Carolina Restroom Building

Bethania Freedman’s Park is a new and historically significant park in Winston-Salem that honors Black history in the Bethania area. The Bethania community was originally founded by African Americans following the Civil War, and this park serves as a lasting tribute to that heritage.

The park offers a variety of amenities, including a large picnic shelter, a fitness station, picnic tables, benches, walking trails, and a modern restroom facility.

While the City of Winston-Salem has partnered with Romtec on multiple occasions, this project marks the City’s first installation of a sidewalk restroom, a streamlined, efficient restroom designed for high-traffic areas with space or security concerns.

The Romtec sidewalk restroom features a single-user, ADA-compliant restroom with a mechanical room and several thoughtful design elements: trench drain, lower and upper louvered vents for natural ventilation, Steelcraft doors, Hager door closers, Lithonia lighting, and a Metcraft toilet. The structure’s sleek metal exterior and louvered vents provide visibility and airflow, helping discourage misuse and allowing for faster, safer access for users.

The compact design is not only quick to install but also easy to maintain, making it a practical solution for parks like Bethania Freedman’s.

Garanco, Inc., a general contractor based in Pilot Mountain, handled the restroom installation for the City. Known for their high-quality construction and dedication to service, Garanco brought the project to life seamlessly.

Allied Design, a Winston-Salem-based firm providing engineering, consulting, and surveying services, also played a key role in the project. Allied Design praised Romtec for our collaborative support during the design phase. Steve from Allied noted that the City of Winston-Salem was very pleased with Romtec’s design process and product offerings.

This project was a meaningful opportunity for Romtec to contribute to a site of cultural and historical importance. Providing a modern, accessible restroom for Bethania Freedman’s Park aligns with our mission to support communities through thoughtful design and dependable infrastructure.

The more projects we complete in North Carolina, the more we appreciate the beauty and impact of park and recreation development throughout the state.
