John H. Kerr Reservoir near Boydton, VA
Boydton is a small town in Virginia in Mecklenburg County near the North Carolina border. It is the county seat of Mecklenburg County and sits along state route 58 and near the Roanoke River.
Boydton is about 150 miles from Virginia Beach which sits on the Atlantic Ocean on the east coast. The town is about 90 minutes from Richmond, which is the capital of Virginia.
With over 55,000 acres of public land, John H. Kerr Reservoir is an excellent place for fishing, swimming, boating, and camping. The lake stretches 800 miles of wooded shorelines, through six counties and two states.
There are 30 recreation areas around Kerr Reservoir. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers constructed the John H. Kerr Dam across the Roanoke River in 1952 to produce hydroelectricity and for flood control.
The North Bend Park campgrounds are near the John H. Kerr Dam and provide 200 camping sites for tents or RV’s, a playground, a boat launch, picnic shelters, fishing, boating, an amphitheater, hiking trail, and beaches. North Bend Park is also the largest park on Kerr Lake.
